Mattie van Kuo: The character of Mattie originally stems from an old friend of
mine. We were once young and excited about ourselves, and thought that every single thing we did or said was the funniest
thing in the world. That friendship was the catalyst of Skipping Out, but when he
and I went our seperate ways in life, Mattie's personality took an unexpected turn. Instead of being jovial and silly,
Mattie became rude, harsh, and despondent. The development of Mattie's character has
been the most fascinating to me. He's typically not somebody I would even talk to in real life, and yet I admire him.
I take comfort in the fact that Skippy has a roommate and friend who will be brutally honest, terrify the weak-minded, and
slash anyone's tires for him. Mattie is like a vicious, quick-witted bodyguard with a lit cigarette; if you're not
on his good side, be very very afraid! The heart and soul of the strip always has been about camaraderie,
and the relationship between sweet-natured and ill-tempered is one worth years of studying... or chuckling at.
